When Was the Last Time Someone Checked Your Glycol?
Degraded glycol concentration is the most common preventable cause of freeze damage in commercial chiller systems. It's also the easiest problem to catch, if someone is actually checking it.

Glycol concentration drifts over time.
System top-offs, small leaks, and evaporation all dilute your glycol. When the concentration drops below the threshold for your operating environment, freeze protection is compromised, even if the system has never shown an obvious problem.
A freeze event starts at $3,000 in parts before labor.
Water expands. The pressure ruptures the evaporator tubes or barrel. Repair starts at $3,000–$8,000 for parts and goes up from there. Downtime on a production line adds to that number.
Most water treatment programs don't check glycol.
Water treatment is scoped to chemistry: pH, corrosion inhibitors, biocide. Glycol concentration monitoring falls in the gap. The vendor checks the chemistry. Nobody checks the glycol.

Inhibitor Package Condition
Uninhibited or degraded glycol becomes corrosive over time. We check the inhibitor condition and flag if it needs replacement before it starts attacking aluminum, copper, or steel components.
pH and Corrosion Indicators
Low pH in a glycol system attacks heat exchanger metals. We test, document, and report. If the inhibitor has broken down, that shows up here first.
Leak Assessment
Losing more than roughly 1% of system volume per month indicates a leak somewhere in the loop. We check and document. Frequent top-offs are often the first indicator that something is wrong.
